new shoes
At the end of WWII, people in Athens were suffering from starvation and poverty. Photographer Voula Papaioannou, took a photo of a little girl who was given a pair of new shoes and she could not stop looking at them. It was very hard for her to believe that they were hers and she was hesitant in throwing away her old rugged pair that she kept holding tight in her hands. This little piece of embroidery is inspired by this historical photograph where a pair of new shoes signified that the nightmare was over. At least temporary since a civil war was about to begin…  (Photograph available at the Benaki Museum photographic archive)
